History of the City Market

The Original City Market

The original Saint John City Market (named Country Market and held in the open air) was located at the foot of King Street at Market Square. The city eventually came to control four more markets;

  • A fish market and wharf on Water Street
  • The Country Market which was a cluster of sheds on Market Street
  • The Sydney Market which served the Lower Cove Loop
  • The Haymarket in King Square.

As Saint John grew in size and influence, these markets were centralized.
